Washington is a major travel hub with access to two international airports and one national airport. There are daily direct flights from many locations in the UK, including Edinburgh; we recommend booking international flights into Dulles International Airport (IAD), as it is easily accessible to downtown Washington via the Metro and about 40 minutes away by car. The other international airport is Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and is 30-60 minutes away by train (Amtrak or MARC) or about an hour by car. For domestic or connecting flights, National Airport is about a 15-minute drive from downtown D.C. Washington is also very accessible by Amtrak train from other Northeastern cities, including New York and Philadelphia.

There are excellent public transportation options in Washington, including the Metro, buses, and taxis or Uber/Lyft. Depending on the neighborhood and your destination, streetcars and water taxis are also available. Parking can be limited and D.C. traffic is notoriously bad, so we don't recommend driving unless you are planning to travel outside of the district. Please note that D.C. addresses include a direction based on the quadrant of the city (NE, NW, SE, SW) and are very important to include when using GPS for directions.
